Easter Sunday, March 31st
The Christian festival of Easter recognises the resurrection of Jesus Christ, three days after his crucifixion. Easter traditions include church services and decorating Easter eggs which are symbolic of the empty tomb where Jesus was buried in Jerusalem.
Other traditions include festive family meals, gift giving, Easter egg hunts and giving something up for Lent, the six weeks before Easter. For example, it is common for people to give up chocolate or alcohol during Lent, a small sacrifice of appreciation or the large ones made by Jesus Christ.
Mother’s Day, March 10th
The tradition of celebrating Mother’s Day is over 100 years old. Before this different cultures had different ways of honouring mothers in their different calendars. The modern Mother’s Day is an international festival originally created in the United States. In North America and China the day falls on the second sunday in May but in the United Kingdom it is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent, the six weeks before Easter.
Carnations are popularly given as gifts but it was lilies that were planted by Chinese mothers when their children left home. In Australia, the chrysanthemum is the seasonal flower most commonly associated with Mother’s Day and also contains the word “mum”!
In Mongolia, Mother’s Day comes in summer, on the 1st June for Mothers’ and Children’s Day
In Taiwan, Mother’s Day comes on the same day as the Buddha’s birthday.
Elsewhere around the world, in the Phillipines, the mother is called the ‘light of the household’. In Thailand, Mother’s Day is celebrated on the Queen of Thailand’s birthday.

Halloween, October 31st 2012
Each year on 31st October, Halloween is a yearly holiday that is celebrated around the world. Originally called All Hallow’s Eve it links up with the end of the summer harvests, autumn and winter seasons, the beginning of dark nights and a time to move inside.
Traditional activities at this time include trick-or-treating, attending parties in fancy dress (or a costume) as you can see below, carving into pumpkins, lighting bonfires and other games and activities.
We know the origin of the festival comes from the Catholic festival of All Saint’s Day on the 1st November. The Celts (pronounced “Kelts”), an old tribe (ethnic group) in central and Northern Europe believed that evil spirits came along with the short winter days and long dark nights and believed the barriers between our world and the spirit world were at their weakest on this night. Bonfires are lit to scare away these evil spirits. There are many other rituals and hisotry related to this festival and it makes interesting reading. Read more about Halloween HERE.

In England car boot sales, second-hand shops and street markets are popular ways to search for unique gifts and useful things. These kinds of events often take place at weekends and in town squares so it was nice to witness something familiar.
Congratulations to everybody who took their final exams this year and is moving on to the next stage, some of them into the world of employment and some into further education. Keep in touch.
